History of the museum

Atelier du boutonnier
Dreamed of by industrialists and local artists since 1904, the Musée de la Nacre et de la Tabletterie opened its doors to the public for the first time on May 22, 1999.

The extremely long constitution time reflects the complexity of creating a museum that is not dedicated to Fine Arts. This results in a mutation of the initial goals. Indeed if the stake was to promote trade and give artists models for their industry in 1900, it was no longer that a 100 years later while the last factories were closing their doors. One of the most important of them, the "Dégremont" factory, was then chosen to establish the museum, thereby symbolizing the change of times.

Versement de l'huileDesigned as a true museum of the 21st century where collections and audiences interact, the Musée de la Nacre et de la Tabletterie remains uncommon in the French museum landscape. Both an industrial museum and an art museum, a science and technology museum, a place of conservation and creation, it has built up its own unique identity.
