Description

Come and discover the exhibition "The fan, materials of excellence" which, thanks to its success, runs until August 31.

The displays welcome new residents. Some illustrating the latest acquisitions from the Musée de la Nacre, including some emblematic examples of the manufacture of workshops in the Méru region, and a fan with a throat sculpted in the Art Nouveau spirit. The panaches provide a feather effect, while in the center of the throat a woman's face seems to spring from feathers. The magical evocation of forest spirits responds to him on the painted leaf of a fairy and goblins.

What would a fan be without its mount?
The strands support the leaf, protect it
and sublimate it; carved, engraved, applied with gold leaf
or silver, sometimes enhanced with precious stones,
they unfold one after the other to discover their decor.

Paris, capital of fashion and elegant women, vibrates with the genius of its great artisans. The fan, both an art object and a fashion accessory, belongs to this imagination. In search of this essential, women are received in the big houses. From shop to shop, in the Opera district, they marvel at the beauty of the paintings, and are seduced by the refinement of the mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell or ivory sculptures. In their hands, the virtuosity of the tablet makers of the Oise is expressed.

For the most part remained in the shadows, the craftsmen of the Méru region contribute to the influence of French decorative arts. If they are best known for making the buttons or dominoes that made their reputation, history has neglected their talent for the fan. Their ingenuity and their know-how magnify rare and precious materials from distant countries. Africa, India and the paradisiacal islands invite themselves into their workshops for nearly three centuries to make this tablet-making center the first in France, Europe, and certainly the world.

The fan, materials of excellence, unique exhibition, pays tribute to the savoir-faire of these craftsmen. More than a hundred fans from the beginning of the 18th century to the present day highlight their mastery and creativity.
